GenCon 2004: Friday

Posted by Bryant on August 21, 2004 at 08:08 AM

It's Friday? Must be time for fatigue to set in.

White Wolf either sold out of the new World of Darkness books instantly, or they didn't get them in time; no clue which, but as of around noon on Friday the booth had signs explaining that they were taking preorders. Anyhow, I haven't seen it, so in lieu of commentary I'll offer up a probability chart.

I got to run through the True Heroes event but not otherwise roleplay, since my CCG tournament ran direly late and I had to miss my afternoon game. Today should be better, and the True Heroes run was a ton of fun -- it's a sort of a directed LARP experience with puzzles and fairly decently implemented combat in which you toss magnetic balls at small steel plates. We took out Magneto. Booyah!

The Ennies were awarded last night; I suspect the results will be archived here but for now they're on EN World's front page. Green Ronin did very well, as did Hero Games. Minor editorializing ahead: I am kind of amused that after a number of people complained about Black Sails Over Freeport winning an Origins it proceeded to win a Silver Ennie. Redhurst: Academy of Magic won an Origins, and did well at the Ennies... but never mind; the Origins are irrelevant and the Ennies are the new freshness.

There are bootleg DVD dealers all over the dealer's hall. This makes me somewhat sad. For an industry that is concerned about pirate copies of RPGs, we do not seem to care all that much about private copies of DVDs. From a purely practical standpoint, it sends the message that it's OK to scan stuff and put it up on the Internet, which seems to me to be counterproductive. I hear Origins was bootleg free this year, so it can't be impossible to crack down on the bootleg dealers.

Off to breakfast!

The nWoD stuff went on sale at midnight Friday -- if you were wandering around at noon, of course you wouldn't have seen them.

Ah! It might perhaps have been wise of White Wolf to clarify that for the casual fan; I was under the impression that Friday was the day. This was somewhat accentuated by the fact that they had lines set up for credit card and cash on Thursday, but on Friday they'd replaced those lines with handwritten "Preorder here" signs. So just a little scattered is all, I guess.

I got my copies this morning.

I was in the dealer room on Friday (I think--the days all run together) when a GenCon official walked up to a booth and told them to get rid of the pirate videos. The vendor put up some resistance, but the official was firm. The vendor said he'd need some time to box the videos up, but the official said that, while that was ok, he'd have to cover up the materials with a sheet immediately. She named Lucasfilm product and pointed them out to the vendor as being unlicensed.
I attended the "Internet Piracy" seminar while there, and it was great! I'd suggest hitting the website of drivethroughrpg as they are selling PDF versions of a lot of materials. Steve (one of the brothers from white wolf) started drivethroughrpg, and they are getting agreements with many companies. (ie the new vampire book was on there the same day as the official release. PDF version is $10 less than hardback ($25)).
