The Princess' Kingdom

Posted by Jim Henley on September 11, 2006 at 07:53 AM

Carnation Island is my second TPK island (haven't published the first yet) designed especially with my daughter in mind. A few more male citizens crept in than I initially envisioned, because my son was playing too, but most of the authority figures are women or girls. I also tried to avoid the "softness" that Sydney Freedberg identified as common to DITV-derived play of members of what the US courts call "suspect classes."

So there was this town that I ran for Dogs in the Vineyard in which the Dogs come into town and find out that the local whitey folks have been killing Mountain Folks because, they say, the Mountain Folk are "backsliding" and "worshiping demons." Well, five or six of the whitey folks were doing this.

So the Dogs go nuts, end up punishing (including at least 4 executions) the whitey folks. Then, when they actually get around to speaking to the Mountain Folk, it turns out they are worshiping demons after all. Well, 3 of them were.

Afterwards one of the players accused me of changing the town midstream, and only shut up when I showed him the town write up. (Interestingly, this is the only time I've ever had a player request to see a town write up that I didn't volunteer first.) Apparently the idea that there was going to be good and bad in all sides of all conflicts was something he had never once considered.
