Here's a really excellent post on misogyny in genre movies and geek circles. Now, if you read that, and then mash it up with this post on 'historical' gaming, then I don't really have any work to do here at all.

These posts are wonderful. These days I just flat out skip Internet discussion about historical gaming, simply because the probability of running into casual, offhand misogyny is too damn high.

I just read Frank Miller's 300, because I have vast interest in the Greek and Persian wars and thought a comic about it could be cool. I should have remembered that it was Frank Miller. Homophobic Frat-Boy Sociopath Democrat Spartans is a bit much for me to take on an empty stomach.

Brand, to cure yourself of Frank Miller just read one of his comics out loud. After about five minutes, after you lose the ability to stop cracking up at his ludicrous self-parodizing narration, his comics will no longer be able to ever cast a spell over you ever again.

Actually, all I had to do with 300 was read it. The scene where the Spartans are twisting each others arms and spanking each other while chanting the equivalent of "thank you sir can I have another" pretty much ruined any ability for me to take it seriously.

I haven't read 300. The last Frank Miller comic I've looked at was an issue of All-Star Batman, which I tracked down after seeing someone cite it as an example of egregiously casual misogyny. (They were right, and it was egregious enough to even eclipse Batman's child abuse and murders.)

Or just watch Sin City and let Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen do the reading for you. Bruce couldn't be bothered trying to give the lines any more life than they deserve, Mickey does and kinda succeeds, and Clive gets stuck with the worst of it.
